    Start by doing your own seo
    A good start is by Google, it works well, look at the source.(download the pdf).

    You will be wasting your money. SEO is a slow process. Get the basics right first. The more you go into SEO the harder it gets. Submit site-map, make sure site is well coded and W3C compliant. The keep adding good, original content.

    As per some of the above answers, you get what you pay for.

    It depends on how competitive your industry is, the more competitive the higher the cost.

    I work for this company who seem to be one of the leading ones.
