Borders file for Bankruptcy

Borders is the second-largest bookstore chain in the country, but rumors of its financial problems have been floating for quite some time. Rival Barnes and Noble has stayed ahead of Borders by introducing the Nook, an e-reader that competes with Amazon’s Kindle, although, both bookstores are no match for the online shopping behemoth when it comes to lower prices on reading materials.

By the end of December, Borders had $1.29 billion in liabilities and assets of $1.28 billion. Stories started to circulate that Borders was not being able to pay back publishers or even rent for the stores they occupied. The closing of 200 under-performing stores will also result in about 6,000 lost jobs.

Well that is the current new’s headlines. Border’s has filed for Bankruptcy. Not only do I predict the demise of these large retailers, I also predict the large shopping malls will follow suit. With their larger retail stores going out of business would result in less traffic to their Mall, then the other smaller retailers will see a reduction in their bottom line and will be force to close.

The Malls have been riding a ‘Dumper”. Here in Australia, a Dumper is a wave that looks good from a surfing prospective, but once it hits the beach, it dumps you.

Are big retailers like Borders riding a Dumper Wave?

Sure the Malls are needed to see what you are actually buying. But how many of us are then heading back home to research the products and find the best price on the net? Besides, the online sites don’t have to pay for premium rent on their warehouse, can situate their warehouses near major shipping hubs and don’t have to have someone standing in the shop looking bored and waiting for customers.

Take Borders, for example. The were paying a premium for rent on their stores, had a huge inventory of books on display and basically requiring customers to physically come to their stores, pay for parking in some cases, have to find their way around the bookstore, and probably wait in line to pay for their books. Besides, I often use the information like on Book Depository, people who bought this book also bought these other books. So that bit of information is not available to the physical shopping in the physical store, unless you can get some help from one of the attendants.

My advice to you is to get your online activities going, learn what you need to learn to become proficient online, and start building your online business. I saw this coming about 8 years ago, built a business selling body supplements (http://www.bodysupps.com) and did very well with this business with minimal expense and outlay. I closed the site and have since turned it into an affiliate site, still selling body supplements but some other business keeps the stock, does the inventory, handles the payment, checkout and fees, and deals with the customers.
